Update, anyone?

Tue May 16, 2006, 7:08 AM
:star: CAN YOU PASS THE POETRY PLEASE? :star:

Anyway, I know that some of you probably won't know some of the literary terms I use quite freely. I'll give you a mini dictionary so you can keep up with it. I would add a link to make this more convenient... but I don't have a paid account. (Hint: Buy me an account!!)

:star: SUPER FANTASTIC LITERARY TERMS! :star:

:bulletblue:Syntax (my personal favorite)- the grammatical arrangement of words in sentences.

:bulletblue:Lexis- all word forms that have meaning or grammatical function.

:bulletblue:Semantics- the meaning or the interpretation of a word, sentence, or other language form.

:bulletblue: Lyric- short personal feelings and thoughts.
1. Dramatic lyric: attributed to imagery and character
2. Elegy: poem of mourning, usually over death. Formal in language and structure.
3. Requiem: repose for the dead, a focus on spirit and life after death. More often refers to a musical peice. (Mozart was famous for them, not because of any underlying depression, but because they brought in money, on commission of course.) - Kudos to ~Attackfish for helping me out with this deff. Thank you!

:bulletblue: Ode- Dignified, formal style on a lofty or serious subject.

:bulletblue: Apostrophe- something inanimate or non-human that is addressed directly. Usually not used in an elegy.

:bulletblue: Concrete Poetry- uses appearence of verse lines on the page to suggest or imitate the poems subject.

:bulletblue:Caesura- break or pause in a line which contributes to the rythem of
the poem.

:bulletblue:Slant Rhyme- sounds of words are similar but not identicle. (Emily Dickinson is famous for this.)

:bulletblue:Satire- holds up to ridicule, wit, and weeknesses.

:bulletblue:Refrain- word phrases, lines, or groups of repeated words, usually at the end of each stanza. Often used in ballads.

:bulletblue:Stanza- unit of poem linger than a single line.
1. Fixed pattern: same number of lines and rhyme scheme usually ABA/C/DC. (tercet/oneline/couplet.) A/N: the one line is NOT a stanza.
2. Ballad stanza: quatrain in which only the second and fourth line rhyme. (ABAB-or-ABCB as an example.)

:bulletblue:Meter- regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line.

:bulletblue:Syllable- is a unit of organization for a sequence of speech sounds.

:bulletblue:Sonnet- lyric poem of fourteen lines, usually written in iambic pentameter (five stresses per line.)
1. Petrarinan or Italian sonnet: usually rhymed ABBAABA/CDECDE. Sometimes the octive raises a question which the sestet answers. Sestet can also oppose octive, or just be an extention.
2. Shakespearen or English sonnet: Three quatrains with a concluding couplet. ABAB/CDCD/EFEF/GG

:bulletblue:Enjambment- the continuation of a syntactic unit from one line of verse into the next line without a pause.
